7 facts of the history of preservatives: why the condoms were prohibited in Europe and why only in year 1991 the censorship of its publicity in EE.UU. rose
1. History of the condoms and Literature
The first mention that became on preservatives, was done by the Italian doctor the Gabriel Fallopio in its works on the syphilis, published in 1564. In order to protect itself of the disease, the author recommended to use a linen cover dampened in a chemical substance that soon dried(1).

It was allowed to sell preventive under a strict state control to prevent diseases. In spite of the existence of these laws, to the armies of the countries previously named condoms without restrictions were provided to them to end the syphilis, very spread by the time.
4. Do the preservatives transfer?
In 1935, scientific of the United States they tried more than 2000 condoms and they obtained like result that 60% transfer. The manufacturing companies declared that more of 25% of the preservatives they are not tried before being packed and that the responsibility to prove them is of the buyer(1).
The reaction of the community forced in 1937 to Food and Drug Administration of the United States to classify to preservatives within the medecine group, thus the test of quality is obligatory. During a time the condoms were sold in other countries that did not pass the test.
5. The preservatives and AIDS
The first article on the syndrome of acquired immunodeficiency (AIDS) was published by the newspaper The New York Times the 3 of 1981 July(2). A year later, in 1982, the scientists spoke on the possibility that this disease could be transmitted by sexual contact.
Nevertheless, the president of the moment, Ronald Reagan, preferred to stress that the solution was to abstain from sex, and it preservative use not to protect itself during the sexual act. Its position was supported by the roman catholic church.
6. Prohibition of the publicity of condoms
A law existed that prohibited the publicity and propaganda related to condoms, this law was approved during the time of the fight by “the moral health of the nation” and was in force until year 1979. The first televising propaganda at national level left to the air only the 17 November 1991(3).
At first, the videos of the publicity scared a little, because the manufacturers made accent in the risk of conceiving or of becoming infected with a serious disease. Nevertheless, in just a short time it was clarified that these videos caused rejection of the consumer, for that reason the publicity became more humoristic.
7. The liquid preservative
Nowadays they take to end a great number of scientific researches that they look for to introduce in the market a new format of already known condom, something as well as a “invisible preservative”: a type of gel or spray who when being applied on the penis becomes impermeable when penetrating(4).
The test units already have been produced and are reviewing their security and effectiveness in L'Université Laval de Canda and Institut für Kondom-Beratung of Germany. Apparently, within about 10 years, this product very will be spread and common.

The history of the preservative, that nowadays seems to us a so simple product, began approximately 1000 years ago. The relation that has had the society with its use has changed throughout the years, happening through the love, until hatred and the total prohibition.
